From Booklist Feeling bored and unloved in his stuffy, late-nineteenth-century London home, Jack follows an enigmatic magician through a portal into an alternate world. There he explores the eerily familiar, yet frighteningly different city of Londinium, where brass grills embedded in the inhabitants’ nostrils enable them to breathe heavily polluted air. After being ensnared by the malevolent magician and adopted by the unstable Lady, who rules the land, Jack escapes and works with his few friends to free an ancient creature that can set things right in this damaged world. Clockwork creatures, metal fairies, and industrial pollution give the fantasy a steampunk twist. Like the story’s setting, its tone is bleak—uncommonly so for a novel apparently aimed at middle-graders. The dramatic plot twists, more than involvement with the mostly adult characters, will draw readers to finish the story, as will the vividly described settings and smooth pacing. The black-and-white illustrations were not available for comment, though the jacket art is intriguing. An unusual take on the alternate-worlds theme. Grades 5-7. --Carolyn Phelan

Review “So full of verve and imagination that the sinister steampunk world practically pops off the page. The prose sparkles, the inventions astonish, and the characters are ones you'll root for from the moment you meet them. Loved it, beginning to end.” (Stefan Bachman, author of The Peculiar)"In this steampunk fantasy...no one character is all good or all bad, and Trevayne explores their motivations and machinations thoroughly. The richly drawn world and inventive steampunk elements help this novel stand out from the pack of middle-grade fantasy." (School Library Journal)"[F]ast-paced, escalating suspense...the novel’s strength lies in worldbuilding and vivid descriptions, and Anglophiles will likely enjoy the historical-cultural references." (Kirkus Reviews)"Once action passes through to Londinium the pace picks up and the steampunk narrative starts to hum. Jack's mechanical ability is put to good use, but it is the power of loyalty and friendship that gives the story its strength and drives it to a rousing conclusion." (The Horn Book Magazine)

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Trevayne writes with a very literary style, penning wonderfully crafted and smart sentences. By KidsReads Children's literature of all stripes often begins with the premise of lost or neglected children. Those children may find themselves on grand adventures, sometimes in other worlds, which help them make sense of the life they left behind or which compel them to return home. Emma Trevayne's latest novel has all these hallmarks of juvenile literature fantasy-adventures, along with several others. FLIGHTS AND CHIMES AND MYSTERIOUS TIMES adds some cool steampunk elements and inventive characters that make it at once familiar and original.Jack Foster lives in 1899 London with his parents but spends most of his time away at school or, when at home, with the family housekeeper, Mrs. Pond. Jack's parents love him but seem to have little time for him, leaving him often in the care of others or alone with his beloved books. Things get a bit more interesting when Mrs. Foster's new spiritualist, Mr. Havelock, shows up and inquires about taking Jack on as an apprentice. Jack's mother says no and Jack's anger grows. Following Mr. Havelock one day, however, leads Jack through a magical portal, up a tower and then down to Londinium, a world of gears and velvet, mechanical body parts and life-size wind-up dolls with souls; it is a world that reflects London above and one that enchants and frightens Jack.In Londinium, Jack's pink skin and lack of brass bits mark him as an outsider. Luckily he soon befriends Beth, a wind-up girl with a sharp mind who takes him to her creator, Dr. Snailwater. Though Jack is thrilled to be in Londinium and happy to be away from his family and his old life, it soon becomes clear that his stay there will be complicated and dangerous --- it turns out Mr. Havelock, really a man named Lorcan, has planned to bring him to this sooty and strange city all along. Jack was identified as the next “son” of the Lady. The Lady is the ancient and mysterious ruler of Londinium, and she desires the perfect child for herself; one that is sweet, obedient, fun and who will never grow old. In becoming the Lady's son, Jack incurs Lorcan's wrath, for Lorcan was the Lady's son until he grew too old. With Lorcan trying to get rid of him and the Lady’s fickle love, Jack --- with help from Beth, Dr. Snailwater and other friends named Xeno and Arabella --- will have to find his way back to London. To do so, he must break the Lady's heart and free a mechanical beast called the Gearwing, defeat the evil Lorcan and hope that no gets hurt or dies in the process.Illustrated by the fantastic Glenn Thomas, FLIGHTS AND CHIMES AND MYSTERIOUS TIMES is charming and strange, and also a bit dark and violent. Londinium is a fascinating place of magic and danger and the characters are enigmatic and interesting. Trevayne writes with a very literary style, penning wonderfully crafted and smart sentences. Though this is another-worldly adventure, the pace is, at times, a bit slow. Still, the story of a willfully lost boy and his journey home is enjoyable and inspired overall.Reviewed by Sarah Rachel Egelman

Magical, sophisticated middle grade wonder By Martha Brockenbrough Marvelously written and conceived, FLIGHTS AND CHIMES AND MYSTERIOUS TIMES is about a boy who finds himself elsewhere, but not quite interested in going back home. The writing and wide range of beautifully drawn characters will appeal to fans of Neil Gaiman. As the story grew darker and more smog-choked, I found myself ever drawn into Trevanye's well-oiled, brass-edged world. An excellent work with a deeply satisfying ending.

He spends most of his time away at boarding school, readying taking over the family business from his father when the time comes. Consequently, he has a pretty cold and distant relationship with his parents and finds that Mrs. Pond, the woman who cares for Jack, is the most affectionate with him. One day, Lorcan Havelock, a magician/spiritualist, comes into his mother's life to replace the previous one for a social group she meets with.He seems to show an unusual interest in Jack and one day he asks Mrs. Foster if Jack may attend the magician's school he is associated with as an apprentice rather than the regular boarding school he currently attends. Jack eavesdropped on the conversation and when he hears his mother decline, Jack becomes very upset with her. While out enjoying London one day with Mrs. Pond, Jack spots Mr. Havelock and follows him into a secret door at the base of Big Ben. It turns out that this door, when entered at a certain time, is a magical gateway to Londinium, a city that has been build to be very much like London. We find out that Mr.Havelock's reason for wanting Jack is so he can be the son for the Lady, Londinium's ruler.Londinium is filled with steam, pollution, and magic. Because of the bad conditions (pollution wise), many people have metal body parts to help them breathe. There are also excellent prosthetics for limbs, eyes, and other body parts. They have found a way to give these parts life so they move very well with the host body and are not simply attached to it.Because of the ability to give the body parts life, impressive automations of all sorts of animals, servants, and faeries have been created. It also seems that many of these creatures are native to the island that Londinium is on (it was pretty unclear in the book, but some myths about them go way back).Jack finds out that one of these creatures is the key to getting him back home again after his doorway is destroyed.Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I would have liked a liittle more at the end, but it ended well enough. Beth and Dr. Snailwater were excellent supporting characters and I like how we got a little background for each of them. It is a great stand alone novel, yet there's plenty to work with if the author decided to do a second book or make it into a series.
