But after Parker gets a write-up in the paper, a citation, and a ride in the Fourth of July parade, Suzy is ready for everyone to move on already. Then Parker screws up Suzy’s birthday: he sees a TV story about a fire and people needing help, so he tries to find them, getting lost in the process. Parker is located, but too late for Suzy’s trip to a Phillies’ game. So she takes to her room, both literally and literarily; Suzy assumes the persona of recluse Emily Dickinson. Spinelli’s free-verse structure may make things easier for reluctant readers, but the breaks occasionally seem awkward. That said, kids, especially those who have had a sibling in the spotlight, will identify with Suzy’s feelings. Adventurous readers may want to pursue some of the same paths as Suzy: poetry, Dickinson, the 1800s, and baseball. There are also satisfying relationships between Suzy, her friends, and family. My granddaughter had just written a poetry "book" as required for fourth grade and I wanted to endorse her endeavor. She opened "Another Day as Emily" in the car and started reading it immediately after unwrapping it. She completed it in a few days despite school responsibilities. Once finished, I asked her if she liked it and she said, "It was fantastic!" This adjective has only been applied to "Wonder" and to "Out of My Mind" (also gifts to her). What I am trying to do is encourage a love of reading and personal growth in this competing world of ever-present social media and non-connection. This book is a winner. I recommend it without reservation.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Realistic Characters By This Kid Reviews Books This was another great novel-in-verse from Eileen Spinelli. The verse is in a style that I think makes the story read like a diary or journal. I like how Mrs. Spinelli writes the story so you can really understand how Suzy/Emily feels about the stuff going on in her life. I think Suzy/Emily went a bit over-the-top in handling her problems, but at least it was inventive! ;) The problems Suzy is having is pretty much what a lot of middle school aged kids have and I think it makes the characters more realistic. I thought it was cool to learn a bit about Emily Dickinson too from the story. I’ve heard of her and read some of her poetry, but this story taught me about Emily Dickinson as a person. It was a quick read for me, but the story felt complete when I was done. I think this book is terrific for young advanced readers and middle-grade readers will enjoy reading about characters that are a lot like them. There are random black and white, small illustrations scattered in the book by Ms. Lew-Vriethoff. They are a nice addition to the story.*NOTE I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

A Perfect Summer Read for Pre-Teens (and those of us who never quite grew up) By HannahBananah As a middle-grade language arts teacher, I am always on the lookout for books that are both realistic and uplifting. In "Another Day as Emily," Eileen Spinelli has captured the heart of self-discovery that characterizes the pre-teen years. Suzy's love of baseball, relationship with her younger brother, and navigation of friendships are easily relatable, and Mrs. Spinelli's clear free-verse will not baffle young readers who have never before read a free-verse novel. I would especially recommend this book to girls ages 8-12 who are or fans of Jeanne Birdsall's "The Penderwicks" and those who are just-a-bit young for "Anne of Green Gables."
