About the Author MaryJane Butters - With a last name like Butters, MaryJane couldn't help but have cows become part of her destiny. Smitten by milk cows at an early age when she spent weekends on her uncle's dairy farm, MaryJane begins each day by milking her Jersey dairy queens - Maizy, Miss Daisy, Sally O'Mally, Sweetheart, and Etta Jane - at the end of a dirt road in Idaho where she lives with her husband, Nick Ogle, a willing co(w)hort who pitches in when needed, sometimes offering the cows music and sports lessons. Her many businesses include a successful organic farm, product lines, and MaryJanesFarm magazine, launched in 2001 and available nationwide. This is her first children's book, a cowpanion book to her fifth book, Milk Cow Kitchen, a 400-page cowpendium with 1,100 how-to photographs that detail everything you need to know to keep a milk cow on your suburban half acre, a backyard lot in town ... or at least the fantasy of a someday cow grazing outside your kitchen window.

Megan Butters Rae - After graduating from Gonzaga University and living for a year in Kansas, Megan moved back home to work on the Idaho farm where she grew up. With a degree in journalism, she works alongside her mother, tackling tasks that include everything from writing about cows to milking cows. Megan and her husband, Lucas, as well as Megan's brother, Brian, and sister-in-law, Ashley, are all employed at the farm (MaryJanesFarm.org). A family cowoperative! Her proudest endeavor to date is bringing two little milkmaids into the world to carry on the tradition of loving and caring for the cowpanion members of their farm family.

By Fieldstories I am proud to be a longtime fan of MaryJane, and as a conscientious mom, I think it's really exciting to see MJ (plus her daughter Megan and granddaughters) steering their creativity toward the younger set.For all of us who have loved and learned from the many MaryJanesFarm publications over the years, a children's book is a welcome addition, allowing us to share some of those` down-home farm values with our little ones in a fun (rhyming, even!) fashion. It appears that MaryJane's latest and greatest passion is convincing families everywhere to invest in the idea of a backyard milk cow. At present, the notion may seem a bit far-fetched for most, but MaryJane has conviction, and her enthusiasm is catching - especially when she backs it up with real-world/hands-on/how-to information like she does in her Milk Cow Kitchen: Cowgirl Romance, Backyard Cow Keeping, Farmstyle Meals and Cheese Recipes from Mary Jane Butters book.Moon Over Metropolis is a sweet and fun read, and Sally the gracious cow character is sure to charm her way into kids' hearts. Kinda like Mary Poppins with hooves ;)If MaryJane has anything to say about it, we'll all be bringing a tidy "mini" Jersey cow home in no time. And we'll never want for fresh, healthy, chemical-free dairy again (a very important part of the equation for parents of dairy-craving kids like mine). Am I ready to run out and buy a cow for my single green acre? Well, I've been campaigning locally for a cow cooperative among a few families, and I think we may just be ready to do a cow share next spring. I think that if communities/neighbors banded together to share ownership and responsibility, MaryJane's "cow-panion" concept can really take off. And, if Miss Sally O'Mally is any indication, one act of "farmness" leads to another. In other words, get a cow and soon you'll be composting, gardening, and harvesting a suburban bounty - if you don't do those things already. It wasn't that long ago that ordinary families were living their lives that way, and we were all the better for it.At the end of this book, there is a short and sweet informational section (nothing overwhelming) with a cute cow cut-out for kids, and MaryJane alludes to more children's books to come in the future. I can't wait to see what she and her girl gang have in store. Personally, I'm hoping for even more "you can do it" with a hearty dose of how kids can help their parents turn this DIY dairy dream into reality. My fellow farm mommas out there know how helpful kids can be when they feel invested, and this sort of work is SO good for them. It's fun to think that tomorrow's teen might be asking for a pet cow instead of a new electronic doo-dad. I'll bet that MaryJane can make it happen!

It has catchy little phrases, great rhyming, and a fun play on words. And the illustrations are fantastic. One of the things that I really enjoyed was listening to my 7 year old grand-daughter read it out loud to her little sister and then tell all of us at dinner, "Did you know that Cow Poo is good for the garden vegetables"?! In the back of the book there is a fun little "Have A Cow" project, where a child can name a cow and send it in to the Heritage Jersey Organization for a chance to get their picture in the next book and for $1 to be donated to the Adopt-A-Cow program. Great idea and very fun way to involve little children. I can't wait to do it with my grand-girls. Now, go buy the book! You'll love it.

The prose is catchy and the kind that kids can anticipate: they'll have their favorite pages and verses "coming up next." The illustrations are adorable, and have little bits of whimsy in them (from the faces in the airplane to the daydreaming of Mom Emma). I love that the premise is a city bound mom and daughter who crave a bit of the countryside, and Sally O'Mally delivers it to them; bringing the countryside to them instead. What city mouse doesn't imagine fresh churned butter and wide open skies from time to time? This is a sweet read that will be in your child's revolving bedtime repertoire in no time.
