This year, we brought this book to give it a try … and I personally found it to be a lot more fun than expected.Here’s how: we simply had the book out, and while sitting together, if there was a quiet moment and one of us felt inspired, they’d pick up the book and scan a chapter until finding a question that they were truly curious about – and then off the conversation would fly. It was fun, and it was interesting.We didn’t feel obligated at any time – so if there was a quiet moment and we liked the quiet, the book would stay put. Other times, we’d take turns finding a question that prompted our curiosity about each other. And there were lots of great conversations that were independent of the book. The book simply gave a boost to the weekend: it added to the fun and richness of the gathering, to have one’s curiosity prompted to open up interesting conversations that wouldn’t have occurred otherwise.As a quick experiment, I just opened the book to a random page, and saw this question that I’d like to ask my siblings right now (about high school), “What did you accomplish or try that surprised you?” I feel I have a pretty good idea what they each accomplished, but I’d love to know what they did that surprised themselves! That’s a question I’d never think to ask on my own.In sum, you don’t “need” the book, but you’ll find it significantly boosts the level of fun and meaningful connection in your gatherings.

By Kristen Mattis Life Talks: The Conversations Continue was a wonderfully written book with a huge number of conversation-starters for a variety of life situations. Conversation is vital in relationships, whether it be with spouses, friends, family, or co-workers. This book provides a multitude of suggestions to get the conversation going and to help it continue. The starters are thought-provoking and allow for in-depth conversation. Some of the conversation starters were difficult for me to answer; they challenged me to go deeper within myself to attempt to answer them. I loved the author's introduction to each of the chapters. The introductions helped me to connect better with the author and to see her as a real person with real-life relationship issues like we all have. I look forward to using some of these conversation-starters with those close to me.
