By CalebBROmbs When I first heard that Marvel had written a new Thor, I'll admit I had my doubts, and after I had heard criticism after criticism that the story of this new Thor was poorly written, and nothing more than a cheese fest to push an agenda, I became more skeptic. So, I did what any reasonable person should do when the pot is stirred, I decided to read the adventures of this new Thor myself, and let me tell you, whoever dubbed this as a poorly written feminist propaganda piece, clearly had their eyes veiled by the preexisting thought that they weren't going to like this no matter what. Aaron's writing is still as fantastic as it has always been, and the story is just as entertaining as any Marvel story I've read in the past few years. The story's characters are well written, the plot is entertaining and hardly cliche, and the art is fan-freaking-tastic. The new Thor is an entertaining character with a ton of potential that has only just been fleshed out, I love the idea that the hammer being sentient is more than likely what plays a part in her adapting to the new role so quickly (just a theory, but a likely possibility), and Thor Odinson himself being unworthy has truly given his character more potential than he's had in years. All in all, I'm on team new Thor, and I look forward to reading more about her in the years to come.

I initially wrote it off as another Marvel gimmick to pull in new readers. But hearing about all the praise/slash criticism it's getting I decided to read it myself.I prepared to read something either really amazing or completely terrible, but what I got was just...acceptable. Nothing ground breaking or groan-inducing, save for the long, not-so-subtle, jab at the book's critics, just decent. The art is fine, the dialogue is nothing special, and the plot was serviceable: a mysterious woman picks up the hammer Thor suddenly became unworthy of, becomes the new Thor, flies off to stop Malekith from recovering Laufey the frost giant's skull from the Roxxon corporation. The book's biggest fault is not revealing much of the new Lady Thor's character. I realize her identity is supposed to be a mystery, but having her true personalty shrouded in secrecy kept me from relating and getting invested in her. I do wish Jason Aaron gave a little more insight into the the new Thor; because I want to like her, but she just feels like another bland strong positive female role model. It didn't help that every other character in the book had a lot more personality than her. Although admittedly, the overhype for the book might have preemptively ruined my opinion of her.If you're looking for a fantastic read, I can't say you'll be blown away by this. But if you're like me, and want to see what all the fuss is all about, it's a good read for a long plane ride.

Lady Thor Takes Over (For a Short While) By Anarchy in the US "Thorita, Thunder-Woman, Lady-Thor, Lady Thunderstrike or Lady Hammer Pants!" oh the names for the new woman Thor are endless. Hey, those same names came from Spider-Man and Titania mouths, not mine. So all the hullabaloo since announcing a new person has picked up the mystical hammer Mjolnir, there has been all sorts of positive and negative reactions from numerous camps. As a Thor fan that has read the likes of Walter Simonson's work where Thor is turned into a frog (and even created a frog character with a sliver of the Mjolnir to use known as Throg. And yes, and it's pretty good actually!) to numerous other times in the characters history where he has lost the hammer to being unworthy, I do not see the big deal. So since it's only a short term thing (lady-Thor goes one volume and that's it) and Jason Aaron, one of my favorite writers in modern comics is still at the helm, it's worth a look, right? And who guessed it, it a fun change up from the norm.THOR VOL.1: GODDESS OF THUNDER collects issues 1-5. Picking up after the events of Original Sin, original/classic Thor (or as he prefers to be called Unworthy Thor/Odinson during this period) losses his hammer from a whisper Nick Fury told him. Every Asgardian including Odin, the very creator and one who put the enchantment on the hammer "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor." cannot pick up Mjolnir. Seeing as Unworthy Thor does not posses his faithful weapon, the Frost Giants with alliance to Malekith the Dark Elf ruler see ample opportunity to invade Earth to find the skull of Laufey, the strongest king the Frost Giants ever had. Even without his hammer, Odinson still goes to fight the invading horde but to no avail, and loses his left arm in the process. It looks like all hope is lost, until a mysterious woman appears on the moon and with a mere touch, becomes the new Thor! The uproar over the whole new Thor does have it share of reasons, which I'll explain in a bit, but I did find it this new Thor about being more traditional comics in light-hearted banter and fun, whereas Aaron's previous work on the character was big on ambition (what with the young-hammerless Thor, present-day Avenger Thor, and future king Thor). And considering Marvel is creating the shifting and short term changes for whatever sake (like Falcon taking over as Captain America and Iron Man being evil). All these aspects are short, and will revert back to normal settings soon by thanks of the Marvel event Secret Wars, which appears to shuffle and clean up the Marvel Universe timeline. So in other words, this Lady Thor appears to be very short term thing (as it seems right now of this writing). So either enjoy it or for those who hate it to wait it out for short amount of time.Any who, for this tale, Aaron keeps this series about traditional comics about big action and light humor, with the mystery of this Thor being second as Odinson and a really ticked off Odin want to know who she is. Thor has obviously a newbie as we get thought bubbles of her insight from her perspective in awe and wonderment about who she is now, yet she speaks like a traditional Norseman (Norsewoman?) with knowledge and ego like Odinson would. This does make for some funny moments such as the Frost Giants and Malekith are searching for Laufey's skull, and Thor just crawls up from a broken ceiling with the giants and the dark elf having this surprised look of "where the hell did she come from?!" expression. It's a funny visual moment; as well as the Absorbing Man fighting Thor and spends a whole page going over why Thor should be a man and how feminist are running our world, to which Thor hits him back and retorts how using the word feminist is like using the four letter word. It's definitely Aaron taking shots at traditionalist and vocal critics over the situation and responding in kind. Stuff like that shows this isn't something to take too seriously, especially with Lady Thor fighting Unworthy Thor is an outlandish battle for the hammer. The art for issues #1-4 is done by Russell Dauterman is pretty impressive. It's clean, it's highly detailed, and it looks incredibly kinetic on page with the action sequences (and yes, the subtle pages of character expressions carry the jokes very well). It can a bit confusing because of how much action Dauterman puts on the page, but it's great art. And Jorge Molina does issue #5, which is really cartoony/anime look about it.Now the flaws. I know my Amazon review score is 4 stars, but it's around 3 ½ score. As I mentioned earlier, I do see some of the faults here beyond the simple notion Thor is a woman. That part doesn't affect me at all. What gets me is that many things Thor does do not feel earned; they feel like much of what she does is just handed to her with ease. I'm not saying she has troubles because she does encounter some resistance, but she it feels too easy. For example, most of the time she has zero clue what she is doing or how to do it, yet her powers just happen to work for her and everyone seems in awe of her; even to the point where Aaron goes out his way she is more powerful/worthy than Odinson ever was by showing things Mjolnir never did before for Odinson and using thunder and fighting abilities without the hammer. I'm sorry that's just too much to take for a mere 3 issues showcase Lady Thor is not equal, but better than Odinson. That part digs away at me and why it doesn't feel earned. Maybe it's because Aaron has a crazy time window to have people like this Thor before the hammer reverts back to the Odinson after volume 2/Secret Wars, seeing as if the character had 40-60 issues to prove to be up to the Thor-title, but not in three issues.Another aspect that I felt was the pro-woman aspect of it that is everywhere. I don't want to say feminist vibe, but the whole books feels like it glorifies the fact Thor is a woman now as to beat people over the head. Every page Odinson appears on makes him appear to be useless without Mjolnir, as well as incompetent in his own abilities; whereas every male in the comic be it Odin, Malekith, or Frost Giant just put women down for no reason. It seems so out of character. It doesn't help with the infamous issue #5 with Absorbing Man sprouting how Thor is a guy and should be a guy (when numerous people/sexes/species have lifted the hammer and had Thor's powers before). Even odder is Titania, the Absorbing Man's wife, just gives up a robbery and lets things slide because Thor is a woman now. Why should it matter...? It's a new handler of Mjolnir with the title of Thor, okay, fine. But spending all 5 issues blasting the readers on the notion is tiring and a bit lackluster. I think if Aaron was more subtle about it and showing readers Thor instead of adding meta-talk about the whole Marvel Universe putting a lady Thor down just because Thor is woman, it wouldn't be as harsh.Even if it sounded like I hated this volume, THOR VOL.1:GODDESS OF THUNDER was still fun for me on numerous occasions. It still had lots of action, light-hearted humor, and great art. But the massive amounts of overtones with Thor as a woman did put me off in a few ways simply because Aaron beats the reader down with it every issue. So like I wrote, it's around a 3 ½ score out of 4 star review, but I'll be lenient and round it to 4 stars. After this volume,we finally know the secret of how is this Lady Thor is in Thor Volume 2: Who Holds the Hammer? and might be the last of the character after Secret Wars (though Marvel solicits have shown Lady Thor is still around, so maybe she gets here own hammer? Odinson returns as Classic Thor? No one knows yet). Either way, if you're an long time fan of Thor like myself, I can see why the harsh words are toward this change, but I feel purist are taking it too far. And brand new fans can enjoy it since they have no meditative knowledge of the character, which it might be aiming for.
