Barely escaping from her abusive past with a vicious face scar, 19-year-old Mia wants nothing more than to start over fresh in a big city like San Francisco. She won’t let anybody get close - not that anyone would want to. But when handsome, ethereal Darius Montclaire rescues Mia from a nightclub sleaze, he pulls her into the world of Alchemists - where creating fire from nothing and making potions to erase memories is commonplace. Alchemy isn’t possible without Azoth - a holy energy found in the blood of female descendants of Nicholas Flamel. Mia has the strongest Azoth seen in centuries. Darius craves her body, but when she’s assigned to be his Azoth, he learns to lust for her heart. But Darius has a secret of his own. And Mia’s past won’t let her love ever again. He’s flawless. She’s broken.

I haven't read anything before that involved the elements that are used in this book, so I really enjoyed that.Mia has had a tough life, and all she has wanted to do was escape, but it seems like more trouble has found her. Darius is strange, and crazy about Mia, but for numerous reasons. I really enjoyed their characters and the craziness that is the world they live in.One of the things I was hoping would happen finally did, and I was so relieved and excited. I was hoping for more between Mia and Darius, but I suppose that will have to wait for the next installment. I cant wait to see them together again! Also, I really hope something happens between Lake and Ellie. I think that would be so sweet! I love Lake, he is funny and loyal. I think I am also going to end up liking Vox, but I need to see more of him before I make a final decision.I am legitimately scared of what happened at the end. That sounds crazy terrible. It left me worried (for the fate of the characters) and excited for the sequel. I am also looking forward to seeing more of the magic being used. This series is NOTHING like the Lovely Vicious series, or her other books for that matter. There are magical elements, and creatures of some kind, and a whole world that exists within ours. I am admittedly obsessed with the Lovely Vicious series, and I love everything I have read by Sara Wolf (so far) so maybe I am biased but I absolutely enjoyed this book! It moved at a pretty face pace, which felt right to me, not rushed. I cant wait for the next installment.

The clever dialogue in Lovely Vicious was great fun. The imaginative world and personalities in Fear Me Not were impressive. But this book Flawless/Broken had no up moments. Characters misunderstand each other throughout the plot and live under a chilly, foggy cloud of doom (like San Francisco, where this book is based, in the summer). The main character, Mia, is a little whiney, and understandably -- her life has been a long series of tough breaks, and she wears a barely-healed scar on her cheek as a grim reminder. She wanders around for weeks trying to get a job, but the scar on her face and her police record stand in her way (even though her former bosses had nothing bad to say about her job performance). In one job interview, she discovers she has a rare component in her blood that is in hot demand. It's nothing she accomplishes, it's an accident of birth, and which parent passed it on -- that is not mentioned. But the discovery that she is valuable results in her having to live with a paranormal security system in her apartment and a bodyguard, Lake, my favorite character (asexual though he is, kind of like a eunuch). Mia becomes immersed in the violent, threatening magical world that pays her her half of the rent and expenses. There is no upside to the genetic gift she has.As for the not-romance, I'm not feeling the love for these two main characters. She's 22 and he, Darius, is 637. She's "raven"-haired and half Puerto-Rican, a college drop-out from Idaho, and he's white-golden haired (he wears it in a long eccentric ponytail down his back), a brilliant, serious, magical chemist and not her species. (The name of his species sounds like a large, superating boil.). His species, like the vampires, wants to consume what she is. Weird, disconnected flashbacks to the 1600s, that are supposed to explain the defining romantic moments in Darius's life, feel like an annoying interruption to the plot. The story's point of view shifts back and forth. I wish authors would stick with the female character and just tell the one story. This author hurries us through Mia's unhappy life and Darius's tortured, over-thinking existence and it feels disconnected and rushed and forced.Sara Wolf left us hanging in Fear Me Not. Maybe she lost her interest in that plot line? Or did not know how to resolve it? (Let her escape the alien colony and rejoin her nice, debt-burdened family. Let her return to a normal life without the spaceship and messiah baggage, and he will come to find her.) This book was an interesting writing exercise, and I paid $3 to be part of it, but she should let it go.

By Yolla Sarah Wolf has once again just completely made me in love with her words. So much more different than the Lovely Vicious series, but full of beautiful characters that have grown on me and I can't wait for their story to unfold as the series continues.Mia is so strong and lippy, quite the match for the pantymelting Darius. Can't wait to see how their love story will unfold!! And Lake is such a sweetheart. Please write fast, Sarah! The suspence is killing me!
