The realities of teen prostitution are revealed in this eye-opening, heartbreaking story from the author of America, which Booklist called “a piercing, unforgettable novel” and Kirkus Reviews deemed “a work of sublime humanity.”As a teen girl in Newark, New Jersey, lost in the foster care system, Dime just wants someone to care about her, to love her. A family. And that is exactly what she gets—a daddy and two “wifeys.” So what if she has to go out and earn some coins to keep her place? It seems a fair enough exchange for love.Dime never meant to become a prostitute. It happened so gradually, she pretty much didn’t realize it was happening until it was too late. But when a new “wifey” joins the family and Dime finds out that Daddy doesn’t love her the way she thought he did, will Dime have the strength to leave? And will Daddy let her?

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Thirteen-year-old Dime is a product of the foster system. She finds an escape in the books she reads, but she struggles academically because she is called on to help out with the younger foster children at home. One day she meets a girl who takes her in. Dime finds acceptance here, but is slowly groomed into becoming a prostitute. The book takes the form of a note that Dime is trying to write, whose purpose is unclear until the last chapters. The multiple nested flashbacks and the attempts to have other concepts contribute to the note (such as Money or Truth) much as Death narrated Marcus Zusak's The Book Thief (Knopf, 2006) (Dime herself credits Zusak for this idea) would have failed at the hands of a lesser writer, but they are effective here. The simple, one-line note that the protagonist ultimately writes is heartbreaking. The conditions in which Dime and the other trafficked girls live are horrendous and difficult to read about; however, this novel serves to illustrate that small acts of kindness can make a difference. This title will appeal to fans of grittier problem novels, like those written by Ellen Hopkins, and will provoke discussion. In spite of the gritty content, there is good reason to make this title accessible to middle schoolers as well. There is a helpful resource list in the back matter, including information for victims and survivors of trafficking. VERDICT An important work that should be an essential part of library collections.—Kristin Anderson, Columbus Metropolitan Library System, OH
Review "a tremendously affecting novel" (Kirkus Reviews March 2015)* "An important work that should be an essential part of library collections" (School Library Journal - Starred Review March 2015)* "will linger with readers" (Publisher's Weekly - Starred Review March 2015)* "gritty, graphic, and shatteringly painful to read...a masterfully told, unforgettable tale of what hope looks like in desperate circumstances, and of the struggle to find power in one’s voice." (Booklist - Starred Review April 15, 2015)"Riveting, eye-opening and poignant, Dime is an unnervingly real portrait of life on the streets. It's a world where pimps use charm, cunning and violence to exert gradual - then total - control over vulnerable girls. Until Dime, a girl nearly broken by her situation, somehow finds an exit. If not for herself, at least before it's too late for someone even more defenseless than she is. Unforgettable." (Patricia McCormick, Author of Never Fall Down)"a heartrending and honest portrayal" (VOYA June 2015)"[Dime's] passion for books, her desperate need for love, and the numbing resignation that drives her to courageous action make her a hero who can’t fail to make readers open their eyes, no matter how searing the vision may be" (Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books September 2015)

She's quiet and loves books. She's smart, but doesn't do very well in school. We're never told exactly what she looks like other than she's a young girl. The most overwhelming characteristic we learn is her crushing loneliness. Her foster mother is a bit of a drunk, mean, and using her as more of a helper for the younger foster children in the home. When the mother puts her out in the cold for some silly infraction an older girl invites her to stay with her and her boyfriend. Feeling like she's being saved the boyfriend dotes on her, buying her clothes and making sure she's fed and she's enamored. Starved for love it isn't long before things turn dark and then darker still. It is simple. This novel needs to be read. The psychological manipulation is spelled out so clearly that sometimes it feels as if you're reading a camp manual on how to avoid pimps in the wild. Sex is woven throughout almost every page, but it is never graphic.Told in a non-linear timeline we see the wreckage before the train wreck happens, so there is no hope that our main character will avoid the pain and suffering the reader sees coming. This book is not hopeful, it is raw. This book is real and its necessary. Girls who end up being trafficked are recruited in middle school, sometimes in elementary school. Their childhoods end early and society forgets them. Dime's story is the story of girls in our neighborhoods, in our kids classes and she deserves to have us care.

A painful subject, handled with grace, empathy, and power By Elise Hadden After struggling to deal with her foster mother’s alcoholism and the burdens placed on her that make attending school difficult, 14 year-old Dime gets drawn into the world of a handsome man she knows as Daddy. Daddy takes her in, gives her new clothing and treats her as if she’s the most special girl he’s ever met—something she craves almost as much as she craves library books. However, the longer she stays with Daddy and the other girls in the house, Brandy and L.A., the more unlikely it seems that she will be able to stay in this apparent paradise, as Daddy tells her he is having trouble making enough money to afford to put her up. Eventually he convinces her to volunteer to do the same work as L.A. and Brandy…that is, working the “track” as a prostitute.Dime endures terrible things from her “johns” as well as from L.A., Daddy’s Bottom Bitch (yes, if you follow those last two links you will learn that there is actually an entire website devoted to “How to Be a Pimp”). Through it all, she maintains her love for Daddy and remains convinced that she is his favorite. However, when Daddy develops a scheme to make more money, he takes them all on a road trip to collect a “surprise” that will change all the girls’ views of Daddy forever. As the truth of her situation dawns on Dime, she hatches a plan to save a life, even if it means giving up her own. This book is tragic and incredible. It’s not often that a young adult book tackles this kind of difficult subject matter at all, much less with the power and depth that is present in Dime. Never have I read anything that so candidly and unapologetically dove into the how and why of child prostitution (better titled, as some would rightly argue, child sexual abuse) without creating a story that is too sickening to read. Dime’s desperate hunger for love, Daddy’s terrifying ability to manipulate girls in need, and the utter darkness of the sordid world these girls are trapped in are such important things to understand in a world where these things happen OFTEN.Even though I know a topic like this will not immediately appeal to many of you, I would absolutely encourage you to read this novel. It’s wonderfully written, poignant, and important. E.R. Frank has provided the world with a book that deserves to be read by every one of us, because understanding these tragic things that sicken us is sometimes necessary to make ourselves aware of the things going on under our noses. I was shocked at how amazing this book was, and I would love to have someone else to discuss this book with, so please read it!To learn more about how you can help end child prostitution, check out Children of the Night.--Elise Hadden, Under the Heather Books [...]

Frank gives a nuanced and human narrative into a world most of us just experience through the filter of the news, i.e. prostitution and sex trafficking. DIME can be read quickly but that does not mean it is an easy read by any stretch. This novel gives an important voice to the statistics. I do not cry easily while reading and this book's ending had me turning pages and sobbing. Wow.
