“Why are you saying moo?” asked Calf. “You're not a cow!”“I like moo,” said Little Rabbit … Here's a farmyard frolic that will have kids quacking, oinking, and hee-hawing along with a cast of adorable animals. The fun begins when Calf hears Rabbit out in the field mooing—and feels inspired to give a great big BAA. Why? Because he likes the sound! Before long, Lamb, Piglet, Baby Donkey, and all the other creatures on the farm realize they're not limited to their own language, but can enjoy experimenting with others. The cute surprise ending shows that Little Rabbit—who started the delightful chorus by thinking outside the box—still plays by his own rules. Thanks to Jonathan Allen's wonderful illustrations and engaging join-in text, this will become a favorite that kids will read again and again.

The Little Rabbit Who Liked to Say Moo, by Jonathan Allen

From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1—Little Rabbit likes to say "moo," because rabbits don't have a big noise. The little creature also likes to say "baa," "oink," "hee-haw," and "quack," and gets the other young farm animals to join the refrain until a surprise ending reveals the bunny's favorite sound. The illustrations are large, uncluttered, simple, and bold, made of black lines and computer air-brushed color. While Little Rabbit is not as cute as Allen's Baby Owl in I'm Not Cute! (Boxer, 2005), its facial expressions create an endearing character. With its large print and natural repetition, this cumulative tale will be useful for building early literacy skills. Pair it with Denise Fleming's The Cow Who Clucked (Holt, 2006) and Jules Feiffer's Bark, George (HarperCollins, 1999) for a rousing farmyard group session featuring animals that have the wrong voice.—Angela J. Review This book is a brilliant demonstration of how, in the right hands, a simple dialogue and vocabulary, and a patterned predictable text can be combined to tell a REAL story of wit and humour. Absolutely guaranteed to raise chuckles of delight, not too mention moos, baas, oinks and more from readers and listeners alike. Books for Keeps

Cute story but recommended for babies-toddlers By Z Hayes Though the age group for this book is given as 4-8, I find that the concept and story are more apt for babies and toddlers than preschoolers and up. The story itself is a cute one - a little rabbit tries to find his 'voice' and starts mimicking other animals' voices, garnering a following in the process. It is only at the end, that his other animal pals find that they are more comfortable with their own natural voice, but which voice does rabbit find suits him best? This is a fun picture book and makes for a good read-aloud.

The illustrations are charming and clear, easy for a group to see. As the farm animals keep trying out different sounds, the story gets sillier and sillier. Yes, it is simple and repetitive, and two-year-olds enjoy it, but I've read it to kindergarteners who love it too. I ask them how a rabbit would say "moo." They have to think about it and they have a lot of fun coming up with a rabbit-sounding "moo." Very cute book!
