Review "[Of Masks And Chromes] is the first episode of a series simple and straightforward in its unraveling, enjoyable...the story is there. The idea of the book is interesting and history does not lack real examples of this such as the Whites against Blacks in medieval Tuscany..." - Davide Dotto, scrittevolmente.it "A plot line that keeps you predicting with some surprising twists. Even when you can predict correctly, the resultant outcome is surprising. Characterization is flawless as one hardly realizes it's being done. There are certainly several relevant themes at play. Thumbs up. I'm getting them all." - Kindle Reviewer"Skin color matters... mask color matters... a refreshing look at racial prejudice, and just how arbitrary and artificial it actually is." - Goodreads Reviewer"The world-building was superb, the suspense built deliciously, and at the risk of giving away more spoilers, I'll just say my only disappointment was that it ended too soon." - Kindle Reviewer"I wanted to find some words to describe this book but it left me speechless. I loved it , the plot, the idea was one of the most inspiring to me, I wish there were more books like this." - Goodreads Reviewer "Very different story - I started it and didn't put it down until the end. Will defintely read Book 2 to see what happens to Asheva next." - Goodreads Reviewer

By lisa I loved this book - It's not usually the kind of genre I would usually read but an old collegaue pointed it out to me - and I just couldn't put it down. From the first page I was drawn into the hero's (Asheva's) world, which was extremely vivid and easy to visualize. I think this is one of the main reasons I found it so engrossing: I could very clearly imagine the settings, the characters, and the striking chromatic world - they sort of lept off the page and drew you in. It reminds me of a mix between Game of Thrones and Pillars of the Earth. There is something for everyone here, engrossing sophisticated plots, GREAT characters (male and female), really good messages on many levels without being simplistic (about human nature, politics, war, freedom, morality, good vs evil), action, suspense, adventure...I am in my 40's but this has a bit of a Harry Potter wide age appeal, with a main audience I imagine around 13 to late twenties. I sent the first book to my two godsons who are 13 and 14, and a friend's son who is 16, and of the two who have read it so far, they absolutely loved it (and apparently are talking about it with their friends - it would be nice to have a print version so they could exchange with friends). I will definitely be sending them the next books as well!

The cover caught my eye, and the book description hooked me enough to download and start reading. The world opens intriguingly. Everyone is identified by their Chrome or the color of their essence. 14yr old Asheva is of the Black Chrome clan. We join Asheva as his father takes him to an execution, and the pace doesn't slow down. A war is declared, family and friends die, and within the space of a few chapters, Asheva commits a crime and becomes a fugitive. The world-building was superb, the suspense built deliciously, and at the risk of giving away more spoilers, I'll just say my only disappointment was that it ended too soon. 4 out of 5 stars.Check out my other reviews on http://kwmccabe.org/interviews

The writing is very uneven: pretty good in some places, cringingly vague and awful in others. Overall, it's about an 8th-grade reading level. They should have marketed these as children's fiction, it definitely isn't "adult"-level material. Nevertheless, for idle reading, it's alright. And it's only $2.99 per installment.
