While at the Psi Academy, Sebastian and Henry and their fellow 28 cadets are taught by its eccentric faculty how to develop their diverse innate psychic powers such as mind reading, tele-influencing, bending objects, walking through walls, remote viewing, fortune telling, conjuring wraiths, and even summoning the dead. These powers are also enhanced during the playing of competitive video games known as 'Mind Games'. But several weeks into the grueling curriculum, Sebastian and Henry suspect that the Psi Academy may be hiding a deep, dark secret and that the good guys running it may not be good after all and the bad guys not bad.

By Karen I'd like to thank the author for a copy of the book and the chance to review it through the GoodReads First Reads program.~Escape from the Psi Academy – Vincent Scarsella~I liked the book. A new twist on things. The characters had their own personality and quirks that made them unique. The kids in the book were normal teenagers making normal teenage mistakes. The main character is an average boy trying to do the right thing but not always making the right decisions. Who to trust? Who’s lying? What do we do now? : All kept the story going at a nice pace.I liked the ending. While it was left open for book 2, there was a definite conclusion that didn’t leave me hanging. And it has a nice twist that I didn’t see coming. I’m interested to see what happens next.No insta-love, love triangles, drop-dead gorgeous, or dumb girls doing dumb things and needing a boy to save them. And no one sparkled! Thank you, Mr. Author.The only problem I had with the book was the frequent reference and comparison to Harry Potter. The characters apparently hate the Harry Potter series; yet they mention it way too many times. I think the book is capable of standing on its own and doesn’t need to “name drop” to get attention. The first couple of times was ok, but after a while, it became a nagging annoyance.Other than that, I liked the book. I would recommend it to any teen or adult reader that like fantasy/adventure type books.

The lead character, Henry, is a classic underdog who rises above his condition in order to defend what he believes is noble. The book is appropriate for middle & high schoolers, yet as an adult, I found it quite enjoyable. There hopefully will be a sequel which I will be purchasing.

The characters were fascinating; and, their methods of interacting quite imaginative. The attention to detail really made the story come alive. As the story progressed I found myself wondering what was real, and what was not? Quite an adventure! I can't wait to read the sequel.
