Review "I really enjoyed this second book in the new Liz Lucas Cozy Mystery series. Good plot, great characters and story. Love the dogs and the recipes are an added plus.As the story unfolds you get to know the characters and Liz is right in the middle of another murder. This time it is her summer intern, a really nice kid with a lot going for him. Lots of suspects that have to be whittled down to find the motive and murderer. Dianne always has some weird, quirky people in her books that go along with her other very likable ones. Looking forward to future installments to see if Roger runs against the awful and incompetent chief of police. I'm sure he won't go down without a fight! Another great read that has you waiting for the next one!"

Once again all it took was one sitting--it kept me that involved!! And of course at the end are all those mouth watering recipes that are served at the Red Cedar Spa, a couple of which Mike was helping prepare before as he was driving home his car went over a cliff. Was this an accident or was it murder? And why would anyone want to murder Mike? There are really a lot of different suspects and since the good Sheriff of this town is absolutely no good at solving anything-Liz decides to take it on herself again. You are going to love how Brandy Boy, a St. Bernard, who sleeps almost constantly, wakes up when he hears bells ringing to deliver a tiny bit of Brandy to the clients--becomes the ultimate hero of this novel. Of course Winston, the boxer who was bought as a present for Liz and is a trained protector plays his part too!!

By Forrest & Lynn Unfortunately I found this second book in the Liz Lucas series to be poorly written. I had enjoyed the first book in the series and was looking forward to this, the next book. There is the chief of police who the town knows is terrible at the job, but continues to relect him. Liz ia a very likable character, starts making unbelievable statements in this book.Spoilers follow in order to explain my reasons for 1 star.Mark is a cooking intern at the spa. He tells Liz why he is down and distracted. "the problem is, it's so bad that if I do tell anyone, I could be in danger and so could my friend." He says he told his girlfriend about how his friend confided to him about this dangerous and serous problem. Then he says, "... I've decided I'll take care of it tomorrow.". Mark is then found to have driven off the road and over a cliff, after leaving the spa on his way home, that same day. During the funeral Liz hears the principal and vice principal discussing the computer hacking and grade changes of students, to allow a quarterback to go to Stanford on a scholarship. The principal feels the prestige of having this student go to Stanford outweighs any other concerns like the dangerous precedent it would set, or the illegality of the action. Marks girlfriend stands up at the funeral and states she believes he was murdered and asks everyone to help prove it. After the funeral Liz shows the CHP Accident team the parking lot, they find break fluid and tell her they believe Mark was murdered. She tells the CHP she can't believe a nice "man" like he was would be murdered. The officers tell her they don't know what will happen since the case falls to the chief of police, and he is known to be incompetent. She goes off to muse on how unreasonable it is that anyone would have reason to murder Mark. Due to the incompetence of the chief, everybody thinks Liz should investigate the murder. Even her boyfriend, a San Francisco defense attorney, agrees. In this series, along with this authors other series, she has good plots and likeable characters. I don't understand why she writes "air-head" behavior. It is frustrating to see good plot points connected so badly. If the author reads this please consider my reasons for not enjoying this book. I feel you have potential to write really good books. Books that drive the reader on from page to page. This series in particular has a great base for stories. Let your characters be as adult about the murders as they are about their lives and businesses.Cozy Mysteries are stories occurring in small communities, and where the writer down plays the sex and violence of the crime. Sometimes a sense of humor is woven into the situation. Cozy doesn't mean the main characters act outside their normal intelligence.
