Over the past twenty years, she has had a diversified career in the retail, apparel, consumer goods, and aesthetic industries. Sandy has learned that in the fast-paced world of brand innovation, reinvention is critical, and she has applied that ideal to herself with her own writing and exploration. Just as in business, Sandy believes that every day is a new opportunity to examine your life and to choose the best ways to be successful and happy and to live your truth. In a note Sandy stated, ‘My hope is that my book can help others who find themselves in the same situation as me. The book is about personal strength and courage of a daughter (me) who faced multiple challenges while taking care of her sick mother and elderly father. I wrote the book because I felt that if I didn’t tell my story, I wouldn’t make it out of the other side. My best friend was my computer, where I sat and wrote, trying to make sense of things. Writing was the way I deciphered the hopscotch of people and situations that crossed my path.’Sandy starts her book with sharing her 50th birthday: ‘When you turn fifty, you take a mental inventory of your life – I think it’s unavoidable – and realize where you are. I did the same on the morning of my fiftieth birthday. I had a job I liked, a boyfriend I enjoyed spending time with, and my family was healthy – if seven hours away in Rochester, New York. Overall, I thought, things were going relatively well. I was happy with my life. I remember thinking, “This is pretty good,” as I walked into my office on the morning of my birthday. Famous last words.… I was getting fired – effective immediately.‘ She then proceeds to share the rest of that signature day with the news that her mother was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and more and more. The too brief synopsis of the book is as follows: ‘Sandy’s story is familiar, yet extraordinary. Her experience will resonate with many readers who will see themselves in her. They will recognize parts of their own life in Sandy’s struggles to find herself in the midst of crushing family obligations, professional concerns, and personal obstacles. Sandy’s strong-willed and fiercely independent nature is the driving force behind her personal reinvention and serves as an inspiration for those who join her on this journey. You may not know Sandy personally but after reading her story, you’ll soon consider her a close and trusted friend. LIVE YOUR TRUTH is precisely that: honest and true.’Sandy writes well, especially considering this is her first outing with the pen/computer! In what other writer’s memoirs her story could sound sanguine, morose, and forced, but the way Sandy sees the light of possibilities at the end of the proverbial tunnel - and shares that gift with the reader – makes this a very fine read. Compelling memoir By Doug Erlandson Sandy Cooper has written a compelling memoir of the struggles that began at age fifty when she not only lost her job but almost simultaneously became the caretaker for her mother, who was dying of cancer, and her father, who, while not in immediate danger of death, was suffering from mental and physical decline. Anyone who has become the caretaker of an elderly parent will resonate with Sandy's trials and tribulations, as she finds her time totally eaten away by her duties as a caretaker, and as she does battle with a medical community that too often seems content to adopt the easiest solution (sedating the patient with drugs) and with a financial advisor who has invested her father's assets in funds quite inappropriate for a person of his age and condition. While much of this memoir is primarily descriptive, Sandy from time to time speaks about the lessons she has learned during the process of being thrust into her caretaker role. Like life in general, learning and applying these lessons is an ongoing process, and when one gets to the last page of the book one feels that the story is far from finished and that Sandy is still in the process of sorting out what has happened and is happening and is not yet solved the mystery of what is taking place.Sandy Cooper's writing style is engaging and lively. Her story quickly hooked me and by the time I had read a couple pages I wanted to keep reading to the end.
